HECKFIELD
This name has been subject to alternative, and parallel, developments. It
could be (and was taken in 1280 to be) 'hedge open land', but that does not make
good sense. Many medieval and later forms suggest hypothetical Old English
'Heahfeld'='high open land', which does. But there are persistent spellings
suggesting that the final 'h' ([x]) of the first element became [k], and that
'Heckfield' and 'Highfield' competed right down to modern times. Today the
village is 'Heckfield' but we find 'Highfield House' (possibly a revived name)
right in its historic centre.
